This is the route I know best and the one I never write about, so here it is. The 08:15 ferry from Kadıköy pier, a tulip glass of tea from the man with the tray, a simit torn in half for the seagulls who follow the boat all the way across. Twenty minutes. The Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque line up on the left like a postcard that refuses to get old.
Every long route I have written starts with this short one. If you visit Istanbul and do only one thing I say, do this, early, on a weekday, and sit outside.
