The regional trains down the heel of Italy are cheap, unhurried and stop everywhere, which is exactly what you want when everywhere is Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and Ostuni. I bought a week of tickets for less than a taxi from the airport would have cost and let the timetable decide the days.
Ostuni is the one I keep going back to: a white town on a hill with the sea a few kilometres off and olive trees that were old when the Normans arrived. I wrote most of notebook no. 21 on a wall above the groves, waiting for the 17:02 back to Bari and not minding when it was late.
