The ferry leaves Bar at ten at night and most of the passengers are drivers who have done this crossing a hundred times and go straight to sleep in their cabs. I did not have a cabin. I had a reclining seat, a blanket from home and the whole upper deck, which at midnight in May is the best room on the Adriatic.
I wrote for two hours with the wake behind me and the lights of Montenegro thinning to nothing. At five the sky went grey, then pink, and Bari arrived as a line of pale buildings with a castle at one end. The coffee at the port bar was terrible and I would go back for it tomorrow.
